Her future's so bright!

We embarked upon potty training this week and it has been loads of fun! I was waiting until we got back from vacation to "test the waters" and so we gave it a go on Tuesday.

I just left her bottomless for all of Tuesday, most of Wednesday, and Thursday morning. She had quite a few accidents on day one, and found her preferred spot to urinate...in her closet! That was day one.

Then on day two she did better, had fewer accidents and even pooped in her potty twice! We were super excited. But I also gave her popcorn and let her color and play with stickers while sitting in her potty chair and watching Toy Story. So that helped a lot. Duh!

By day three I made up a treat jar to give her prizes after she went in her potty. She loved this and was highly motivated. But she also wanted a treat every 10 seconds.
Um no.
That's not how it works.
She would run to me and say "I potty!!! Yay! Good girl Awuh. Yay!" And I would run over to see. Nope. Nothing. She would then tell me "Cayndy momma. Cayndy".
Um no.
She did eventually go, and I let her pick out a treat. She had stickers, fruit snacks, candy, and some little party favor toys to choose from. She went again as soon as we got home from the grocery store. I let her pick a treat of course.
She chose this.

Do you remember these from back in the day? They are different plastic fruits and have candy sugar inside. Like pixy sticks!
She didn't get it so I poured some on my hand and showed her how to lick it off with her tongue. So then she was all digging it and took it back to try for herself. I let her be and continued to unload groceries and put them away.
5 minutes go by and this is what I see all over my rug in lines...

And here is what Ava is doing...

So glad she catches on quickly.
No, Ava. We don't pour powder in lines on the living room floor and then lick it up. That's not what mommy showed you.
Um, yeah. Should I be worried about her future????

Swim Lessons

I knew Ava was going to love swimming when she was 6 weeks old. We took her to the pool and she was so content and just loved the cool water on her little newborn body.
Then, by the next summer, when she was 14 months old, I had her signed up for survival swimming lessons for ages 6months-2 years. I decided this class was the best option for my Ava, for I knew her fiesty, independent personality and I feared that because she had no fear, she would just jump in the first pool of water she came upon.
So we went and I had no idea what to expect, other than being told that babies would cry, and moms would too, but to remember that this class is to teach a baby to save themselves from drowning. And so I kept that in the back of my mind, and tuned out all the wailing for one week last summer. I was on a mission to teach Ava how to save her life if she were to get in a dangerous situation at the pool.
To my surprise, Ava hardly cried the entire week! Even through the dunking, the passing of babies to unfamiliar mommies/daddies, and even going off the diving board! She loved it! And she learned how to swim to the side of the pool when jumping in, holding on to the ledge, and then pulling herself out of the pool to "safety" (land).
Here's my little baldy last summer...

It was remarkable! She learned to hold her breath upon the count of three, and I learned some important tips as well.
Fast forward to a year later...

We decided to do a refresher class the beginning of June, and there were a few more tears this year, but I quickly learned that she was only crying because of the others crying. My girl has a lot of empathy! ;)

Sidenote: Sheila, my partner who I still have not officially introduced you to, is in the red swimsuit with her daughter, Gianna!

Miss Margaret, Ava's teacher, told me during this first week that Ava was ready to move to the 3-4 yr old class. So, I decided that we would give it a shot, although I had many doubts. I never doubted that Ava was ready to learn how to swim a longer distance, using the technique "touch and push" with her arms, and whatever else they may teach in that class. What worried me was that Ava had to WAIT HER TURN and sit still on the ledge of the pool while the other kids had their turn. I COULDN'T even fathom for a second that she would sit and listen. And to give her credit, she is only 26 months old.
However, her attention span is that of a goldfish.
Anyway, we gave it a shot, and yes, it was a beating trying to get her to sit still. I mean look at her naughty self giving me that face!!

We had to tell her to sit still 56,789 times in 45 minutes. She would cry and cry to get in the water or get up out of her spot. She was perfectly happy as long as she was in the water.

Or if she was getting to go off the diving board.

But don't make her sit still! Oh! And don't make her float on her back! If this girl thinks for a slpit second that she is not in control, she flips out. And being on your back is giving away some sense of control, apparently.
Look at that pitiful face, refusing to straighten out her legs and relax!

Swimming to Miss Margaret after jumping off the diving board.

And here is a video of her swimming the length of the pool with Miss Margaret's son. Ava loved him! Notice at the end he says something about her using her left arm. This is because she swims with her right arm doing the touch and push, while her left arm stays in the back. It is so funny! I guess she thinks she can get the job done just as well with only using her right arm. Which actually, seems to work for her. It just looks a bit odd!

I am so thankful my girl took these lessons and we look forward to putting them to great use much of the summer!

I must be crazy!

I must be crazy.
I told you all that hubby gave me money for a trip to Sea World for Mother's Day.
Well, that trip is coming to fruition in three days.
Just Ava and me.
In the car.
For at least 4 hours.
I must be crazy.
We are staying with a good friend/sorority sister of mine from TCU, and hub is super busy this time of year and can't take off work, so this is jsut how it has to be.
So, before I talk myself out of traveling alone with her, I was wondering if you had any tips, advice, scripture, herbs, magic tricks, etc. to share???
Ava is a great kid.
But she has very little patience.
She gets antsy super fast.
And she doesn't sleep in the car unless she is wiped completely out.
I plan to leave just around nap time.
Is that a bad idea? I'm hoping that EVENTUALLY she will fall asleep.
And we have a DVD player in our car so that will work for about 35 minutes.
But what about the other two hours?

Here are my specific questions for all you mommies out there that have FAR MORE expertise than me.
-Is leaving at nap time a good or bad idea?
-What kind of fun things (games, toys, bag of things) are suitable for a new 2 year old? She isn't really into toys much, esp. in the car. That's the only problem.
-Should we take a few stops along the way to let her out and stretch/run/skip/whatever or just try to go as far as possible and only stop when necessary?
-Just how much benedryl can I give a 32 lb. 2 year old?

Just kidding about that last question...
I am excited about our weekend and we are so blessed to be able to do fun things for Ava such as this. And I know it will be much more difficult with more children, so I need to make the most of it and not sweat the small things. If only my type A personality worked like that!

Thanks in advance for your tips!!!

My photo
Ft. Worth, Texas
After having my girly girl in April of 08, and spending oodles of money on one of a kind boutique, monogrammed clothing (with hairbows to match), I decided it was time to learn this trade myself before I went broke! I learned how to sew, embroider, and make hairbows in a matter of 3 months. What started as a hobby has turned into a dream come true. I quit my job as a teacher and now work from home when the little one sleeps. My life as a mommy and a boutique clothing designer/manufacturer/monogrammer is truly the best of both worlds!! I have big dreams for the future of my family and the future of SheShe Made. Thanks for joining me as I blog about the journey. Let me know if there is a bow or outfit you'd like custom made for you! Email me at sheshebows@yahoo.com and thanks for stopping by!
